We are tentatively planning another club only event to give back to our members. This event will be a pub crawl across the many breweries in Jacksonville. NOTE – You MUST be current on your annual dues (2014) to attend this event.

ICC-8 Homebrew Competition

Here is a brief summary of the approach for this competition.
  • 3 commercial beers in 3 different styles have been chosen
  • Each Center selects the 3 best beers from all 3 styles
    • Could be one from each style
    • Could be all from one style
    • Could be any combination of the 3 styles
  • Additional points given to the homebrew that tastes most like the commercial equivalent (actual scoring is TBD)
  • All entries will be sent to a single judging location (TBD)
  • Entries due in early April 2014
  • Competition / judging will be held the end of April 2014
There was much discussion about the styles and commercial beers.  We tried to pick styles that were popular to many home brewers, readily made by many home brewers, and somewhat challenging to the average home brewer.  We also considered which commercial beers were available across the country and were representative of styles across the country.  There are many good beers that are only available in a limited area.  With all those competing requirements we came up with the following commercial styles and beers.
  1. IPA: Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA
  2. Porter: Sierra Nevada Porter
  3. Belgium: Saison Dupont

Contact Andrew Carpenter with any questions.

Check out the homebrewers association website for a list of the 2014 club-only competitions on the schedule.

Club Updates

2013 Commander SAAZ Interplanetary Homebrew Blastoff!

SAAZ hosted their annual homebrew competition in September and judged a record number of entries!  635 entries spread across all 28 BJCP categories, as well as our very own Rocket Fuel category, were put to the palates for entrants to win a chance at intergalactic glory.  Congratulations to all medal winning brewers and to SAAZ for being the Heavy Medal club this year!  I hope that everyone who attended the event had a great time and enjoyed the venue and the exemplary Commander SAAZ speech…I know that I did.  I would like to thank to all of those who volunteered to help out, judge and steward, as well as those who entered brews in the competition.  If anyone has any suggestions, concerns, or accolades regarding the event, please email cmdr.saaz@saaz.org.
If you ordered a commemorative t-shirt, need your score sheets, or helped out with the competition and didn’t receive a swag bag, please come to the MEADing this Saturday at Webb’s Honey to pick them up.  Remember to bring cash or check for the shirts!  Also, be sure to keep an eye out in Zymurgy magazine –  Commander SAAZ will be featured in an upcoming issue!
Cheers,
Andrew Carpenter
