Blow off from the Prez

Welcome to the June edition of Blow off from the Prez.  This past month was crammed full of great events, and June is shaping up to be just as fun.  The Hogtown Blowoff was last month, and SAAZ member Dave Webb came home with multiple medals for his meads.  In case you missed it, he made a wonderful chocolate mead.  The next competition in the Florida Circuit is the CASK (Jacksonville) First Coast Cup.  They have a special “Big Wood” category for wood-aged beers with an original gravity of 1.070 or greater. Entries are due July 5th through July 16th, so there is plenty of time to brew.  Stay tuned for more details.

Some upcoming events you might want to check out this month are the beer and cheese pairing at World of Beer on June 15th sponsored by Southampton and Sunseed Food Co-op.  Chris at Florida Wine and Spirits is working to put on a Sierra Nevada tasting, as well as a Brooklyn tasting.  Check out their website or join their mailing list to keep up with the latest information.

In case you missed it, the last meeting was at The Broken Barrel in Palm Bay.  We presented, sampled, and discussed the similarities and differences of the American Pale Ale and Double IPA.  The beers we sampled were Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Lagunitas Hop Stoopid.  If you have any ideas (or would like to volunteer) for educational topics for upcoming meetings, please let us know.

Our next meeting is the Summer Party at Chet and Sonya’s in Titusville.  For the newer members, this is one great event!  The club will be providing Santa Maria Tri-Tip and asks that each member bring a side dish and a bag of ice for the beer engine.  There is also the annual lawnmower beer contest.  Exactly as it sounds, the members vote on the best lawnmower beer that was brought.  There will also one heck of a raffle!

Continue to read further for more information about the things I mentioned.  I will see you all at the Summer Party!

I-95 Directions

Take I-95 toward Titusville (This should be North for most of our members). Get off at Exit 220 (SR 406 or Garden Street) and turn right. At the first stoplight (Singleton) take a left and follow it for about a mile and a half to the next stop light and then turn right onto Dairy Road. Chet’s house is a brown brick about half a mile down on the right hand side (2945 Dairy Rd.)

US-1 Directions

Assuming you are coming from south Brevard, take US-1 north to Titusville. Drive all the way through Titusville. You will pass Searstown mall, Miracle City Mall, and Garden street (SR 406). Keep going until you see Parrish Hospital on your right hand side. The next light past the hospital is Dairy road. Take a left onto Dairy and follow it to the first light (Old Dixie Hwy). From here stay on Dairy for another half mile and you will see Chet’s house on the left. It’s a brown brick house and the address is 2945 Dairy Rd.

Chet asks that we all park in the back until it’s full. Then the overflow can go out front. There is a small fenced area between the house and the pool. Please keep the gates closed so that none of the guests, or the dogs, escape. If anyone has trouble finding it call Chet at 750-1116.

T-Shirts

This is the last call for T-shirts.  There seem to be some people that are experiencing fading on the new T-shirts that were ordered.  If this is happening to your shirt, please bring yours, with a piece of paper pinned to it with your name, to the Summer Party.  We are going to work with the vendor to see if there is something that can be done to correct this.  I can’t promise what will happen, but let’s hope for the best.

Beerworks Charitable Foundation, Inc

Mark Carbone (Treasure Coast Brewers) and a few ‘beer-buddies’ formed a non-profit organization called ‘Beerworks Charitable Foundation, Inc’.  They have organized two Beer Fests so far and have raised over $20,000 for charity in the last two Beer Fest events.  Last year’s event featured over 150 craft beers and over 600 attendees, many from outside the Treasure Coast like PB, Broward, Brevard, etc.

With the success of those two events in mind, they are now in the process of organizing the ‘THIRD’ to be held on Sept 11, 2010.

He is extending an invitation to our club to join in serving your homebrews if you wish.  The Treasure Coast BrewMasters have attended for the last two years with about six beers on tap, and received an extremely great response. Even if we cannot make it as a club, if there are some members that would like to volunteer to help ‘pour’ at other vendor tables, please let me know and I will get them on the list of volunteers.  We need to let them know by the end of July if we can make it.  Please email me if you are interested in helping pour or attending as a club.

Education

This month’s education is something a little different. I am not going to go over one style or get into a recipe, but I am going to give you the keys to all that and much more.  Check out The Brewing Network web page for some great pod cast on brewing. I really like the Jamil Show Can You Brew It.

Where the team discusses how to clone a different beer each week. There is plenty of great knowledge on the site to learn about brewing and all you have to do is download it and listen.

Here is the link and it can also be downloaded for free on Itunes.

Conclusion

Well that is for this month plenty of stuff going on lately that is beer related and should be plenty more to come. Keeping watching your local stores and pubs for craft beer related events. Enjoy all the heat.
