The warm weather is here and it\u2019s time to<br \/>\ncram in as much brewing as possible before it gets unbelievably hot. We have a homebrewing demo<br \/>\ncoming up at the Broken Barrel on Saturday April 9, at 1pm. Then Saturday May 7 is AHA Big Brew<br \/>\nDay at Sunseed Food Co-op in Cape Canaveral. Stay tuned to our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/SAAZ-Homebrew-Club\/154611397890231\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook page<\/a> for more regular updates.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to help represent SAAZ and enter your homebrew into an upcoming competition, now is<br \/>\nthe time to get cranking! We will be collecting entries for the Palm Beach Blowoff at our April Officers<br \/>\nMeeting at Meg O Malleys on Wednesday April 6 at 6:30pm.The Hogtown Brewers are gearing up<br \/>\nfor the Hogtown Blowoff on May 13-14. Check <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hogtownbrewers.org\/Brewoff\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.hogtownbrewers.org\/Brewoff\/<\/a> for more<br \/>\ndetails. If your entry is chosen, you will need to<br \/>\nsend it out ASAP afterwards for the competition.<\/p>\n<h2>Upcoming Competitions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>NASA Inter Center Competition-5<\/strong><br \/>\nEntry Fee: None (shipping only)<br \/>\nEntry Deadline: April 26, 2011<br \/>\nWe will be evaluating any beers that SAAZ members would like to enter at the April Meeting.\u00a0 The competition will be on April 30, 2011 starting at 2pm ET (11am PT). There will be a live internet video stream. Each NASA center or participating homebrew club can submit up to 2 entries per style.<br \/>\nThis year&#8217;s styles (judged using BJCP guidelines) are European Amber Lager (style 3), India Pale Ale (style 14), and Mead (styles 24, 25, 26)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mashtronauts.pbworks.com\/w\/page\/31370049\/ICC5\">website<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Palm Beach Draughtsmen&#8217;s 16th annual Hurricane Blowoff<\/strong><br \/>\nWe will be collecting any entries that members have at the SAAZ Officers Meeting at Meg o Malley&#8217;s (812 E New Haven Ave in Downtown Melbourne). Mac will be driving them down south to avoid any shipping costs.\u00a0 This homebrew, mead and cider competition will come ashore in West Palm Beach during the weekend of April 29th &#8211; 30th! The entry window is March 25th &#8211; April 8th. Pre-Judging will be on the 16th-17th, with possibly some additional pre-judging on the 23rd. Judging will commence on Friday the 29th @ 5pm &#8211; ?? and judging on Saturday will run from 9am &#8211; ?? followed by the Best of Show.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.palmbeachdraughtsmen.com\/hurricane%20blowoff.htm\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meadlennium 2011<\/strong><br \/>\nMay 28-29 2011 Sanford, FL<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.CFHB.org\/mead\">www.CFHB.org\/mead<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>What:<\/strong> We are the oldest, and one of the largest, of just a handful of Mead- Only competitions in the USA. The Alliance of Sommeliers has graciously loaned their special, lead-crystal, glasses again this year for judging.\u00a0 Still only $6.00 per entry. Once again, there will be a special category \u2013 WOOD-AGED MEAD.<br \/>\n<strong>When:<\/strong> May 28-29th. The deadline to get your meads to us is May 6th. Online registration and payment will open April 20th.<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> 1700 South Magnolia Ave. Sanford Fl. 32771<br \/>\nSAAZ will be working with CFHB to get entries to them as part of a beer railroad.\u00a0 Stay tuned for more details.<br \/>\nWe still encourage sending THREE 12-14 oz. bottles, FOUR 10 oz. or TWO 750ml bottles. But we know how precious our mead is, so, this year, we will allow TWO 12-14 oz. bottles, THREE 10 oz. or ONE 750ml bottles, WITH THE CLEAR UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU MAY NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE BEST OF SHOW ROUND OF JUDGING. Our B.O.S. panel has 4-5 judges, and each requires a 2 oz. sample. We will do our best to save enough of your mead, but, if there is not enough left, you will not be included in the B.O.S round.<br \/>\nAll the details, and the forms, will be updated very soon at the MEADLLENNIUM web page<\/p>\n<p>Consider shipping your beer to other national competitions. We will be Skyping with the\u00a0Terrapin&#8217;s Brewmasters to learn how they do it.\u00a0 There will\u00a0be an extreme line up of 19 drafts that features kegs that we are pulling from the cellar that will include the Monster and Side-Project series. This will be an evening you won\u2019t want to miss!\u00a0Our local Terrapin Rep Mike Wallace does a lot to help out our club, especially for Commander SAAZ, so come out and thank him for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 9th &#8211; SAAZ Homebrew Demonstration! &#8211; Broken Barrel Tavern<\/strong><br \/>\nSaturday, April 9th at\u00a01 pm\u00a0Sean and Matt\u00a0will be dragging out the turkey fryers and showing people how to homebrew.\u00a0 Matt from Sunseed Food Co-op will have equipment and recipe kits for sale\u00a0at discounted prices.\u00a0 Come out to help your homebrew club or learn how to brew at home!<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 10th &#8211; Customer Appreciation Day! &#8211; World of Beer<\/strong><br \/>\nSunday, April 10th at 2 pm they will be pulling out the barbecues. They will have hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken and vegetables. Come by early to get your seat, great beer and great food. They will be grilling till all the food is gone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 12th &#8211; Avery Brew Party! &#8211; World of Beer<\/strong><br \/>\nThey will be tapping the Holy Trinity Series along with the Dictator Series. The draft line up includes Reverend, Salvation, Hog Heaven, IPA and White Rascal. Also they will have two new drafts, Maharaja Imperial and DughanA. A representative of the brewery will be there at 7 pm.<\/p>\n<div><strong>May 6th &#8211; Terrapin Beer Food Pairing &#8211; Sunseed Food Co-op<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Sunseed will be having a Food Pairing with Terrapin Beer CO on May 6th. It will be at 7:00 pm and the cost will be $15.00 for the event. It will include a food pairing with 5 different Terrapin beers and a few beers just to taste. You will also recieve a Terrapin glass.<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><strong>AHA Big Brew<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>SAAZ members are encouraged to help out and attend the AHA Big Brew.\u00a0 Matt, Josh, and Sean will be brewing, and we will need your help and support.<\/p>\n<p>A celebration of National Homebrew Day, known as AHA Big Brew, is now in its 14th year. Sunseed Food Co-op\u00a0 will host a local site on May 7, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA), AHA Big Brew celebrates National Homebrew Day, honored on the first Saturday of May.\u00a0 AHA Big Brew brings together thousands of homebrewers from around the world, all brewing beers simultaneously. Yakima grows something like 70% of US grown<br \/>\nhops.<\/p>\n<p>The Hop Union has a great website with really useful links. I especially like the Hop Variety Data<br \/>\nSheets linked near the bottom of the list. It is a pdf of about 54 pages that details the characteristics<br \/>\nof most varieties of hops. It is a bit long but I think it is worth downloading as a handy reference.<\/p>\n<p>Check it out if you haven&#8217;t already.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopunion.com\/hopeducation.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.hopunion.com\/hopeducation.html<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"itemTitle\">Cooking with Beer &#8211; <strong>Beer and Molasses Barbecue Sauce<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Beer and Molasses Barbecue Sauce<\/strong><br \/>\n1 1\/4 cups bottled chili sauce<br \/>\n3\/4 cup mild-flavored (light) molasses<br \/>\n3\/4 cup beer<br \/>\n2 tablespoons Dijon mustard<br \/>\n2 tablespoons chili powder<br \/>\n2 teaspoons soy sauce<br \/>\n2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco)<br \/>\n1 1\/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice<br \/>\n1 teaspoon hickory-flavored liquid smoke*<\/p>\n<p>* A smoke-flavored liquid seasoning that is available at specialty foods stores and at many supermarkets.<\/p>\n<p>Mix all ingredients in heavy medium saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat; simmer until sauce thickens and is reduced to 2 cups, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes. Cool completely before using. (Can be made 1 week ahead.
